History of Uyo LGA

The name "Uyo" is said to be derived from two (2) schools of thought:Uyo is named after a tree called Uyo, commonly known as "Bush Mango", which was predominant within the locality of the present-day Ibom plaza by the Post Office.(ii) It is also assumed that the name "Uyo" came as a result of announcements from the town crier who would always say "...

Uyo Local Government Area established under the Local Government Reform of General Murtala Muhammed's administration.
1987
Akwa Ibom State created from Cross River State, with Uyo designated as the state capital, elevating its national significance.
1999
Return to democratic governance. Uyo begins a new chapter of elected local government administration.
2010s
Major infrastructure transformation — road networks, Ibom Plaza, stadium upgrades, and hospitality expansion.
Today
A thriving metropolitan LGA with smart governance, cultural festivals, and ongoing community development programmes.
