The Honourable Chairman of Uyo Local Government Council, Dr Uwemedimo Udo is a distinguished leader whose tenure is marked by tangible results and commitment to impactful governance. Born into the family of Late Mr. and Mrs. Emmanuel James Udo of Ikot Ebido Oku in Oku Clan, Uyo Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, Dr Udo has consistently demonstrated academic excellence and professional integrity.
An exceptional student, Dr Udo excelled in science competitions throughout his educational journey, culminating in his graduation as the best student in the Department of Chemistry and the Faculty of Science at the University of Uyo. He furthered his academic pursuits with a Master's degree in Chemistry from the University of Ibadan and a PhD in Organic Chemistry from Michael Okpara University, Umudike, specialising in Natural Product/Medicinal Chemistry.
Dr Udo's devotion to service extends beyond academics. As a practising Christian and ordained Elder of Qua Iboe Church, Oku, he exemplifies commitment to both God and humanity. His dedication to public service led to his election as Chairman of Uyo Local Government Council on December 7, 2020. In December 2023, he was appointed Transition Chairman by the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, His Excellency, Pastor Umo Eno, further extending his tenure of impactful leadership. His historic re-election in 2024 broke the long-standing jinx of no second-term leadership in Uyo Local Government Area.
Under his administration, Dr Udo initiated transformative projects, including the construction of the Udom Emmanuel Administrative Block and Golden Technical Block, addressing critical staff accommodation needs. He established an ultramodern health centre in Ikot Ebido Oku and renovated the primary health centre at Ewet Offot, significantly improving access to healthcare.
In education and entrepreneurship, he provided N105.5 million in business grants to entrepreneurs of Uyo origin as well as bursaries for students in tertiary institutions. His infrastructural contributions include the construction of a compassionate home for a widow in Nsukara Offot, remodelling of Uyo City Motor Park, Mbiabong Etoi, road grading projects across the four clans of Uyo, and the provision of electricity and potable water to various communities, underscoring his commitment to grassroots development.
Guided by his leadership mantra, SERVICE ALONE, Dr Udo continues to inspire a vision of governance driven by integrity, accessibility, and progress. His achievements reaffirm that effective leadership is attainable in Nigeria—especially when the right people, with the right attitude, are in the right places at the right time.
Currently, the Chairman of Uyo Local Government Area, Dr Uwemedimo Udo serves as the Akwa Ibom State Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria, ALGON.
