The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs has commended the Chairman of Uyo Local Government Area, Dr. Uwemedimo Udo, for executing community-oriented projects, saying he has lived up to expectations as Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Akwa Ibom State Chapter.
The committee, led by its Chairman, Hon. Mfon Idung, gave the commendation Monday during an oversight visit to the Uyo Local Government Council.
In his remarks, Dr Udo said his administration deliberately shifted development beyond the council secretariat to communities across the local government.
"We have taken development outside the council secretariat to the communities, with emphasis on healthcare, electricity, roads, environmental sanitation, youth empowerment and support for vulnerable persons," he said.
He added that the council restored electricity to communities that had been without power for over six years and had sustained prompt payment of workers' salaries and entitlements.
Commending the council, Idung said the oversight exercise had enabled lawmakers to verify projects executed by local government councils across the state.
"If this oversight had not been carried out, it would have been a disservice to the people of Akwa Ibom State. We have seen firsthand the projects being executed, and Dr Uwemedimo Udo has lived up to expectations as ALGON Chairman," he said.
He described the council's investments in electricity infrastructure and the Compassionate Home built for the widow in Nsukara Offot as commendable, adding that the clean environment at the council secretariat reflected effective leadership.
Member representing Ikono State Constituency, Hon. Asuquo Nnana, said Uyo had gone beyond constructing administrative buildings to delivering projects that directly benefit communities and urged other local government councils to emulate the model.
The member representing Uyo State Constituency, Hon. Uwemedimo Asuquo, commended the chairman's commitment to grassroots development.
Also speaking, the Chief Whip of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Hon. Effiong Johnson, described his first visit to the Uyo Council as impressive, saying the projects and level of development reflected purposeful leadership.
The oversight visit formed part of the House Committee's statewide assessment of projects and programmes undertaken by local government councils to strengthen accountability and improve service delivery at the grassroots.
Present during the oversight visit were members of the Executive and Legislative Arms of the Uyo Local Government Council, Head of Local Government Service, Directors and other staff of the council.
