The Chairman of Uyo Local Government Area, Dr Uwemedimo Udo, on Monday commenced the handover of a series of community-based development projects with the official presentation of the renovated Obo Ediene Community Market and a brand-new 12,400-litre solar-powered water project to the people of Ikot Akpan Ediene, Uyo.

‎The handover ceremony drew traditional rulers, market women, youths, political leaders and residents, who described the projects as timely interventions that would improve the economy, provide access to potable water and enhance the community's wellbeing.

‎Speaking on behalf of the community, the Village Head of Ikot Akpan Ediene, Eteidung Ekong Sampson, expressed appreciation to the Chairman, Dr Uwemedimo Udo, for addressing the area's developmental needs. He pledged to protect the facilities and ensure their proper maintenance.

‎The market women, who are the direct beneficiaries, said the renovated market would create a safer and more conducive environment for trading, while the solar-powered water project would bring lasting relief to residents who had long grappled with access to clean water.

‎The Youth Leader, Mr Uwakmfon Bliss, commended the Council Chairman for prioritising grassroots development, while the Councillor representing the area, Hon. Aniema NdukeAbasi, described the projects as evidence of responsive and people-centred leadership.

‎Also speaking, the Member representing Uyo State Constituency in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Hon. Uwemedimo Asuquo, commended the Council for complementing the development efforts of the State Government under the leadership of His Excellency, Pastor Umo Eno PhD, while the Paramount Ruler of Uyo, HRM Edidem Sylvanus Okon, JP and the Head of Local Government Service, Uyo Local Government Council, Elder Etiuwem Udo urged the beneficiaries to take ownership of the facilities.

‎In his remarks, the Chairman, Dr Uwemedimo Udo, acknowledged the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Eno, PhD, for providing the enabling environment for local government councils to execute projects that directly improve the lives of the people. He pledged to give financial support to the women who are traders in the market, while reaffirming his administration's commitment to delivering impactful, community-driven projects across Uyo Local Government and urged residents to safeguard the facilities for their own good.

‎The Chairman further commended the people of Ikot Akpan Ediene and, indeed, residents of Uyo Local Government Area for their impressive participation in the recently concluded Continuous Voter Registration exercise. He urged them to sustain the momentum by coming out en masse during the 2027 general elections to support all candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

‎Present at the event were the wife of the Chairman, Mrs Akaninyene Uwemedimo; the Vice Chairman of Council, Hon. Christiana Bassey; the Council Secretary, Mr Ubong Udofia; Councillors led by the Leader of Council, Hon. Ekemini Bassey; Supervisors led by the Dean of Supervisors, Obong Idara Akpan; Management Staff of the Council; and other dignitaries.

‎The handover at Ikot Akpan Ediene marks the beginning of a week-long exercise during which additional community-based projects will be presented to benefiting communities across Uyo Local Government Area as part of the Council's ongoing grassroots development programme.
