‎The Chairman of Uyo Local Government Area, Dr Uwemedimo Udo has been conferred with the Distinguished Service Award on Grassroots Development at the Nigeria Public Service Awards 2026.

‎The prestigious national honour was bestowed by the Bureau of Public Service Reforms under the Presidency as part of activities marking the United Nations Public Service Day.

‎The event held at Nicon Luxury Hotels, Abuja on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, featured a Lecture Series and Awards Dinner with the theme: “Transforming Public Institutions: Advancing Innovation, Participation and Inclusion.”

‎Dr Udo, who also chairs the Akwa Ibom State chapter of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), was represented by Mr. Ubong Udofia, Secretary of the Uyo Local Government Council.‎

‎In a reaction conveyed through his representative, Dr Udo, a very intentional public servant who believes in merit, mentoring, and capacity building, expressed profound gratitude for the recognition. The Chairman, a direct protégé of His Excellency, Pastor Umo Eno, PhD, commended the Governor for granting all Local Governments in Akwa Ibom State a free hand to operate and deliver on their mandates.

‎He viewed the award as another call for more work, adding that he feels humbled to be selected among a select few Local Government Chairmen recognised across the country.

‎The high-profile event which had Hon. Ekemini Bassey, Leader of the Uyo Legislative Council, and Hon. Ekerette Okon, Councilor representing Ward 13 as entourage from Uyo LGA, was attended by Heads of State Civil Service, Directors and Heads of Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) from various states, as well as senior military and paramilitary officers.

‎Dr Udo has built a reputation for people-centred governance, sustainable development initiatives, infrastructure projects, and human capital development in Uyo LGA. This latest national recognition further validates his impactful leadership at the grassroots level.
